India stepping five places up in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 improved its position to 52nd in 2019 as against 57th in 2018. Switzerland, topping the list, is followed by Sweden, the United States of America, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel.
The GII rankings published by Cornell University, INSEAD, the UN World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners, entertained the 12th edition of the GII rankings of 129 economies with the theme- ‘Creating Healthy Lives - The Future of Medical Innovation’.
India is improving with its focus on curative and preventive measures in the healthcare sector.
Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Railways, Piyush Goyal presenting the GII-2019, lauded for India’s success. The efforts will be constantly made to reach among the top 25 countries of the Global Innovation Index, said the Minister. He urged the R&D institutions, universities and private sector to turn India into an innovation hub. The Commerce and Industry Ministry urged for the support of WIPO to help India in its rural innovation.
The Minister laid emphasis to help marginalized and under privileged sections of the society. He asked R&D for sustainable and innovative solutions to solve problems like rising pollution levels in cities, depleting natural resources, water crisis, food shortage and issues of climate change.
