The Indian Navy is preparing to operationalise a recently improved naval aviation facility on Great Andaman, the main archipelago of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory.
The facility, which was formerly known as NAS Shibpur, has been renamed INS Kohasa and will be inaugurated by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, on 24 January, according to information re-tweeted by an official account of the Indian Navy’s spokesperson.
A naval public relations officer from the Andaman & Nicobar Command who said on 7 January confirmed this information, which was first released by Indian media outlet Asian News International (ANI). However, the officer has refrained from giving further details on improvements that have been carried out on the facility, citing confidentiality concerns.
A satellite imagery analysis on INS Kohasa on 7 January suggests the construction of new structures and a taxiway near the northern displaced threshold of Runway 18/36. Threshold markings, designators, and centrelines on the 1,000 m-runway also appear to have been repainted for better visibility.
Once inaugurated, INS Kohasa will likely host naval aviation assets such as the Indian Navy’s Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft and UH 3H search-and-rescue helicopters.
INS Kohasa will complement INS Baaz, which is located about 700 km away at Campbell Bay on Great Nicobar island. The Indian Navy operates two other naval air stations in the archipelago at Port Blair and Car Nicobar.
